Funko: Smuggler’s Bounty 40th Anniversary Unboxing

The Funko Smuggler’s Bounty boxes for May 2017 shipped this week. There was considerable buzz for this 40th Anniversary box among collectors – especially after the big reveal that Luke Skywalker with Speeder was going to be the deluxe POP! included.

My box arrived safely this morning and I couldn’t wait to see what else was included.

First off, the box was supersized and larger than the box for The Empire Strikes Back and the Hoth Han Solo deluxe figure. The artwork of Princess Leia was suberb on the box but sadly that was her only representation in this box. It was a huge missed opportunity. My hunch is that this box was in production much prior to the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher. I’ll give Funko the benefit of the doubt.

Upon opening the box, I was greeted by the traditional patch and pin securely glued to the top flap. I’ll give high marks to both the patch (X-Wing Pilot Luke Skywalker) and pin (Chewbacca).

After opening the top flap of the box, that is when the disappointment set in. There was the already confirmed Luke Skywalker deluxe POP!, but the other inclutions were underwhelming to honor the 40th Anniversary of A New Hope. That being said, the deluxe POP! makes this box worth the purchase price alone – especially fans of Luke Skywalker.

Who salted first?

The Han Solo and Greedo salt and pepper shakers were a missed opportunity. I would rather have received a coffee mug that I would actually use. And the sweat bands? I really don’t get that at all. I don’t know many people who wear sweat bands period, let alone Star Wars branded ones.

175 Luke Skywalker with Speeder

All else is forgotten though – because this deluxe POP! is top-notch. I’m mostly a boxed collector when it comes to Funko, but even I can appreciate the level of detail in Luke’s landspeeder. It is also nice to see paint weathering on a vehicle from Funko. My hope is that the continue making similar combinations in the future. As I noted above, this POP! is worth the price the box this month alone.

Overall, I’d give this box a passing grade. While I’m ecstatic about the Luke Skywalker, the other inclusions missed the mark. A lot of collectors seem to be let down that there was not more tributes to the 40 years of Star Wars. You can’t always get everything you want, but overall I’m pleased with my purchase this time around.

If you would rather leave the unboxing to the professionals, Yoko & Cameron of Funko did a video here:

Funko POP!: 156 Scarif Stormtrooper (Walgreens Exclusive)

Toy Line: Funko POP!
Release Date: 2016
Current Price: eBay | Amazon

My love of the Scarif Stormtrooper (Shoretrooper) design is well documented at this point. So it is little surprise that I managed to add the Walgreens exclusive Scarif Stormtrooper Funko Pop to my collection. Although not labeled as such on the box – this is the Squad Leader version of the Shoretrooper. The major differences are the paint app across the shoulders and chest, blaster rifle and kama around the figure’s waist.

Funko is doing an excellent job with their Star Wars Pops now. Each one that I open, I have a tendency to say that figure is one of my favorites. This trooper is right there with Ahsoka Tano in terms of my favorite Pops in my collection.

When comparing this exclusive Squad Leader version to the normal Scarif Stormtrooper, there are a few differences despite having the same mold:

  • The kama around the figure’s waist indicating the rank of Squad Leader
  • The Blue paint stripe across the shoulders and upper chest plate
  • E-11 Blaster Rifle with a nice silver accent to the end of the blaster
  • The belt and lower chest armor has black accents that the normal trooper does not

All in all, this is an excellent figure worth adding to your collection. I currently have several – but mostly due to my unhealthy obsession with everything and anything Shoretrooper related.

Funko POP!: 130 Ahsoka Tano (Hot Topic Exclusive)

Ahsoka Tano (Hot Topic Exclusive)
Toy Line: Funko POP!
Release Date: 2016
Current Price: eBay | Amazon

I knew that this exclusive was going to be a highly sought after figure, so I made sure to wake up early on October 5, 2016 to order one (or two) of Ahsoka Tano’s first entry into the Funko Pop! line. This has been hard to come by for some and the Hot Topic website has been out of stock a few times. Others have had luck walking into the retail stores as well. The moral of the story is if you look hard enough – you may be able to avoid paying the double or triple cost of suggested retail on eBay.

I did a video review of this figure on our YouTube channel. You can find my thoughts on this figure by clicking below. This is a fantastic figure and one that any Star Wars fan (especially Ahsoka fans) should not miss.

Funko POP!: 143 Darth Vader

Darth Vader
Toy Line: Funko POP!
Release Date: 2016
Current Price: eBay | Amazon

I picked up this Funko Pop from my local Target the day after the Rogue Friday madness had ended. Although I keep saying I am not much of a Funko collector, I keep finding myself picking up some of my favorite characters as time goes on. I could never be a completest for them – but I can appreciate the uniqueness of the Pops.

The Darth Vader in the base line was one of the standouts for me. Who doesn’t love Darth Vader? And this is a huge upgrade over the first Darth Vader that Funko did several years ago as the mask and eyes are dramatically improved. Add in the trademark Vader stance and great detail on his chest plate and belt buckle and you’ve got yourself a great addition to any Star Wars collection.

I also did a video review of this figure on our YouTube channel as well.

Funko POP!: 145 Scarif Stormtrooper

I’m a tad obsessed with the Scarif Stormtrooper (Shoretrooper) design. You are sure to see plenty of different reviews this fall of the different products being released for Rogue One as a result. I’m slowly getting into Funko Pop collecting more and more – but I had to have this figure. I’m also constantly scouring the interwebs for the Walgreens Exclusive Squad Leader as well.

I did another YouTube review for this Pop as well as a photo gallery, so please check that out and subscribe to our  YouTube Channel as well.

Funko POP!: 114 Rey (Walgreens Exclusive)

Rey (Walgreens Exclusive)
Toy Line: Funko POP!
Release Date: 2016
Current Price: eBay | Amazon

I decided to try something a little different with this Funko POP! and put my review up our YouTube channel. It is the first one I’ve ever done, and after a few takes – I was pleased with the result and my rudimentary film editing skills (Thank you iMovie iOS app).

As I’ve stated before, I’m not a dedicated Funko collector but this Walgreens Exclusive was too hard to pass up yesterday. It just happens to go well with the Luke Skywalker I previously reviewed a short time ago. This is a great figure and I feel that they nailed Rey’s likeness in their Funko-way. Extending the Skywalker Lightsaber like the cliff hanger at the end of The Force Awakens was a nice touch.

Check out the YouTube video below and let me know your feedback. I’ve also included a photo gallery like I normally do as well. Time permitting, I would like to dual review each addition to my Star Wars collection going forward. May the Force be with you.

Funko POP!: 106 Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker
Toy Line: Funko POP!
Release Date: 2016
Current Price: eBay | Amazon

You’ll notice in my collection that I only have one figure listed for Funko POP! It’s not that I dislike the collectibles (I think they are great), it just that I prefer to focus on Hasbro’s Black Series line instead.

I’ve noticed that others in the collecting community have really taken a shine to Funko’s offerings. They are priced right and don’t take up much space boxed versus unboxed – and most importantly, they are affordable. You can tell that Funko really cares about their fans and collectors with all the different variations that are released and their catalog grows by the day.

It’s well documented that Hasbro hasn’t released a The Force Awakens Luke Skywalker because they saw his reveal the same time we did in theaters. I can buy that, and given their 12 to 18-month time frame to get a new figure on the shelves – it’s not surprising we haven’t seen the Jedi Master yet. That’s where Funko really gets a chance to shine. Their lead time isn’t as great and they earned my business by pushing out a Luke Skywalker earlier this summer.

The figure turned out great, all the way down to his robotic right hand and the BEARD. You can see some of the pictures below. I may end up adding more Funko products into my Star Wars collection down the road, but for now, I am one happy Luke Skywalker fan.

May the Force be with you.
