“We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down.” – Poe Dameron, Star Wars: The Last Jedi
With Hasbro’s new “face-printing” technology coming out, we will see toy companies begin to pay more attention to the smaller details in paint applications. We have a few outlets for replacement head sculpts for Hasbro’s The Black Series action figures. There is the Casting Cave and Mos Eisley Casting among others. Or you can go the route of getting a figure that costs more that already comes with a well casted and painted head sculpt, like Bandai SH Figuarts or Medicomtoy! MAFEX. But where is the fun in that?
There is tattoo parlor in Thailand named Oldboy Custom Tattoo Shop that creates some excellent artwork. These artists happen to be big action figure fans. About five years ago, they started to collect 1/12th scale figures and made small modifications to them as they saw fit. With a lot of practice they started to create their own 1/12th scale heads. They saw it as a challenge and something new to bring to the table as artists.
In 2014, Hasbro’s The Black Series were just seeing some traction. The wave with Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise was part of the newest wave at the time. One of the Oldboy CTTS artists bought Han and realized he needed a little more “touching-up”. The artist realized that the sculpt was spot on, however the paint is what is being missed and for the price it was a turning point for the artists. Back then, there was no competition for the customized/repainted custom heads so they decided to corner the market and go international with their first release, the unmasked Kylo Ren Head.
Since then, Oldboy CTTS has released an array of great sculpts for our collections. They have done Director Krennic, Count Dooku, Jango Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia and many from the Marvel Legends and DCU lines. They have also teased many more like Jyn Erso, Sabine Wren, Chirrut Imwe and many more. We can only hope to see more of our favorite characters in the near future.
The latest of the Oldboy CTTS custom sculpts is the Resistance’s greatest pilot: Captain Poe Dameron. They gave the option to request Hasbro’s Star Wars Black Series: The Force Awakens version or The Last Jedi version. I decided to order The Last Jedi version to stand next to my SH Figuarts collection. I thought the original Black Series head was not horrible. I did have to pick though many options to choose a better paint job, but I found a figure with a decent paint application. I really enjoyed the attempt at his 5 o’clock shadow. The paint application on the Oldboy CTTS customized head is incredibly detailed.
This action figure is a really fun figure to play with. It is great to pose and has great articulation. The figure has great articulation in the elbows, knees, ankles, abdomen, shoulder, hip, wrist and neck.
The details that really stand out are the small paint application in the body. The jacket has small bits of silver to accent the buttons on the jacket. The jacket also has a wash that gives a dirty and used feel to it. The undershirt is ribbed and has texture and includes a bit of a wash. Finally, the bit of detail that i like the most is the holster for his gun. It has a strap that goes around upper leg and it was so well done that it does not hinder the articulation of the leg. Bandai’s SH Figuarts Han Solo is the only other holster that comes close to matching the engineering that it took to create the realism for the holster.
This is a decent figure. It is easy to pose and very fun to pose around. However, what makes this figure a must have is unfortunately the only thing that it does not come with: the Oldboy CTTS custom head. Who knows when MAFEX, or Bandai will create a Poe Dameron for us to put on our shelves.
Oldboy CTTS’ The Ace head is a work of art and a product that was created out of love for the character.
